Will it be typical of an Engllsh aristocrat to thank a killed fox? I don't really know but somehow it does not fit into the picture for me. Aristocratic families in Russia viewed hunting as a pastime for centuries. And thanking a deer looks more like some before-christian animism to me, something that a simple man might do who belives in Christ and also believes in the spirits of trees and animals and feels that he is part of the nature. Non-typical behaviour of a character needs some justification from inside the text, otherwise it ruins the context. In this case Nikolay could remember some person who taught him hunting, some simple man who introduced Nikolay to this ritual, for example. But the author has to explain to readers why Nikolay behaves like this, or it looks odd. Though again, it's beautiful by itself, this teaching a son not to kill without a reason.
Was there much left of the city after "The Siege of Kiev” in 1941? I've read about how many Russian soldiers and residents died and the city was burned. Even homes in rural areas?
In LJ discussion about Illya's childhood I posted a link to LJ blog on Kiev in 1941. The blogger gathered hundreds of photos and wrote the history of Kiev day by day actually. I don't know many details but Kiev was heavily bombed. And after Nazis took over the city they placed their administration and millitary offices in the best houses along Kreshchatik (it's one of main streets). These houses were exploded by communist underground (explosives were put there before Soviet army left Kiev) and it caused a big fire. As for rural areas I guess it depended on how the battles went. It could be that one village was burnt to ashes and another was left intact.
There is a Russian song, I remember it from my childhood. My grandmother and her sisters were singing it and their husbands were listening. Old men by that time, they always asked for this song when the whole family gathered for some holiday. This song is about a soldier who comes back from war after the victory - and his house is burnt down and his family is killed. As a child I thought: "Why do they like this song, it's so sad!" And now I think probably it was their worst nightmare during the war - that they can defend the whole country but not their own families. But in my family women and children survived the war.

Один из князей Голицыных пусть не женился официально (кто бы ему разрешил!), но жил как с женой и имел двух дочерей от цыганки. Это начало 19 века. Это я копала матчасть, хотела написать фанфик про мужа Татьяны. Но его уже написали на мою заявку. И даже не один раз, так что я успокоилась и забросила эту идею

I am confused about what you are asking or is this a rhetorical question? There are many cross-overs as I'm sure you are aware. Good Will Hunting and Man From UNCLE? Why not? FanFiction is a place to let our imaginations run wild (within reason). *grins wickedly*
That was rather rhetorical. Though if I could find an American who reads Russian and is interested enough to read 5000+ words, I would definitely ask ))) It's the only text I wrote about nowadays and a foreign country, usually I send characters far away to the past or to the future, or leave them in Russia at least ))
No, it's not a cross-over with UNCLE, it's with LoGH - Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We have a contest Fandom Battle and one of the tasks there was to make a cross-over with a certain movie. Our LoGH team received Good Will Hunting to cross.

Все-таки коммуналки были характерны для Москвы и Ленинграда, потому что туда, как и сейчас устремлялись толпы людей и им всем нужно было где-то жить. В Киеве проблемы если и были, то не такие большие, к тому же застройка города была совсем другой - на окраине лепилась куча хат и мазанок и при необходимости, жилье можно было возвести довольно быстро. Родители Ильи могли иметь и небольшую хатку в собственности, могли снимать жилье, могли иметь квартиру а пару комнат. Кончено, дача тут не подходит.

Men, women, children were massacred.The song you speak of may be sad, but it's a way to remember and pay respect to the brave soldiers who fought. We have many sad songs about war. I would like to listen to the song you speak of, but without translation I'm afraid it would have no meaning for me.
As I have mentioned before, MLaw wrote a series of stories about Illya's childhood to explain how he grew up to become the man he is. She cannot explain everything about his childhood in one story. The complete tale unfolds in the series. I am aching to share with you what is written in her stories as it would explain much more that you have read so far, but it would ruin the storytellers creation of the series. I will post another rec.
